HARARE, The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will be implemented by end of the first quarter of 2018, the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) has said.

The establishment of the NHIS was first mooted years ago with a view to achieve universal health insurance cover in Zimbabwe.

In an interview, NSSA board chairman Robin Vela said the Authority is now almost there having encountered several challenges especially during consultations with various sectors.

“We are almost there. The scheme will be implemented by end of Q1 2018. There are always challenges especially when dealing with so many sectors but what is important to us is that we had to ensure that we involve all key stakeholders and understand where we are coming from,” he said.

Vela said the scheme is not compulsory but will be inclusive. We are looking at it together with the Workers Compensation Insurance Fund (WCF) to find ways at how we might be able to move those funds to fund the scheme,” he said.

Statistics show that about 90% of Zimbabweans are not on medical aid which means the majority of the workers have to pay out of pocket for all their medical needs.

Several countries including Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania have national health insurance schemes.
