ICZ paid over $300 000 to Rusape bus disaster victims

HARARE, The Insurance council of Zimbabwe committed in excess $300 000 on the Rusape bus disaster  but said government and responsible authorities should hasten to take care of the quality of drivers on public transport, quality of roads and others issues that are claiming the lives of innocent people.

ICcz makes pay outs for victims of road accidents and has partnered an insurance company to ensure the viability of its efforts.

ICZ president Musa Bako told insurance 24 that the frequency of road accidents has been for long of concern.

Recently two buses collided on the Rusape mutare road killing 47 people.

”We paid approximately $300,000 (inclusive of death benefits; funeral and medical expenses).We are concerned with the rate at which accidents are happening and we are looking forward to the government and authorities to deal with issues of the quality of drivers and roads in general.

“We have an agreement with a an insurance company and in any accident they deal with the deceased before we can investigate who is to blame for the accident or who insurers the vehicle in question “he said.

Bako however said in these cases they have been facing a challenge with some transporters who do not have insurance, have fake insurance or whose insurance is not up to date.

“As an institute we go in the first and assist and deal with the administration issues later, “he said.

The country AHS been battling with issues of accidents which have been claiming numerous lives and has been blamed on bad quality of roads, amateur drivers among other issues.

Analysts say instead of making payouts government should consider investing in roads and aligning traffic laws
