CBZ Bank secures sustainability certification

CBZ Bank has secured sustainability certification, strengthening its push to embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into its operations, lending decisions and broader approach to value creation.

The certification, awarded by the International Council of Sustainability Standards for Value-Driven Financial Institutions and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development (EOSD), marks a significant step in the bank’s sustainability strategy.

CBZ Holdings said the recognition reflected the bank’s efforts to move sustainability beyond a standalone corporate responsibility initiative and make it an integral part of its business and decision-making processes.

“This achievement is not only an institutional recognition; it is a reaffirmation of the bank’s commitment to embed sustainability into the very fabric of its operations,” CBZ said in a statement.

The bank said financial institutions have a significant role to play in shaping economic activity because of their influence over the allocation of capital, the businesses they finance and the investments they facilitate.

“As a financial institution, CBZ recognises the profound influence banks have on shaping economies through the allocation of capital, the businesses they support, and the investments they enable,” the bank said.

“For CBZ Bank, sustainability cannot remain at the margins. It must be central to how it governs, how it does business, and how it creates value for its stakeholders.”

CBZ said it had been undertaking measures to integrate sustainability across the institution, creating a platform to use its financial capacity, market position and institutional capabilities to support enterprise development and investment.

The certification comes at a time when sustainability and ESG considerations are gaining prominence across Zimbabwe’s corporate and financial sectors.

Businesses and financial institutions are increasingly expected to consider their environmental and social impact, governance practices and long-term resilience alongside conventional financial performance.

For banks, the sustainability agenda extends beyond reducing their own environmental footprint. It also encompasses how they assess and manage risks, direct financing and support businesses and projects capable of contributing to sustainable economic development.

CBZ said the certification should be viewed as the start of a wider sustainability journey rather than an end in itself.

“The true measure of this achievement will be seen in the businesses that grow stronger, the investments that become possible, the opportunities created, and the lasting value generated for our customers, communities, and the nation at large,” the bank said.
