ICZ appoints new chairperson, deputy

The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has elected CBZ insurance principal officer James Mharadze as its chairperson, taking over from Nicoz Diamond CE David Nyabadza, who has been at the helm of the Council since 2023.

Mharadze, who was also recently elected chairperson of the Council of Bureaux for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Yellow Card Scheme, will be deputised by FBC Insurance director Alice Shumba.

Congratulating the duo, ICZ wished them success in driving the industry forward.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Chairperson – James Mharadze and Deputy Chairperson – Alice Shumba.

“Congratulations to both on this well-deserved recognition. Wishing you success as you take on these pivotal roles and drive the industry forward, the Council said.

Mharadze is coming in with over 23 years of experience in the insurance industry, having worked in various capacities in the industry.

Mharadzes’ 14 years of experience are at senior management level.

He is a complete insurance professional with experience in both short-term insurance and life assurance industries comprising of 19 years in general insurance and two years in the life assurance industry, having worked for AIG Zimbabwe, Zimnat Lion, OptimalInsurance, CBZ Life and CBZ Insurance.

Mharadze has been the Principal Officer of CBZ Insurance for the past 9 years and his key responsibilities included implementation of board policies, designing and implementation of corporate strategies, financial management, coordination of all operations functions, performance management and stakeholder management.

He holds leadership roles in the Zimbabwe insurance industry as the current vice chairman of theInsurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) and Chairman of the National Bureau of Zimbabwe.

Mharadze holds a B.Comm (Hons) in Insurance and Risk Management Degree from NUST (Zimbabwe) and an executive MBA degree from Midlands State University (Zimbabwe).

On the other hand, Shumba, who is also the president of the Women in Insurance in Zimbabwe, is coming in with over 20 years’ experience in the industry.

She is a holder of a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Insurance and Risk Management from NUST (Zimbabwe), an MBA from ESAMI (Tanzania), and is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) UK.

She is also a member of the FBC Holdings Women’s Forum, and as part of her service to the next generation of leaders, she sits on the board of Junior Achievement Zimbabwe.
